Bio
As CTO, Schafer is focusing efforts on implementing virtualization to enhance mobility and productivity of state employees; developing a strategic approach to the state’s web portal; providing technical support for a statewide ERP implementation; and working with counties, municipalities, local school systems and telecommunication providers to expand broadband and cellular services throughout the state.
Prior to his work in state government, Schafer worked 24 years for NiSource, where he served as director of technology and design. During his tenure there, he held the positions of manager of application development, director of technology, vice president and CTO. From 2000-2005, Kyle led a team of more than 300 IT professionals with a primary focus on the centralization, consolidation, standardization, and integration of NiSource’s technical infrastructure.
Currently Schafer serves as president of the National Association of State CIOs.
